WOMEN’S COMPETITION BEGINS

Round 1 of the VU Polytechinic Senior Women’s Competition kicked off with a bang on Friday night and saw teams in both Divisions eager to make a statement with their first wins.

Out at Saltwater Reserve, a refreshed Point Cook battled it out with a newly minted Caroline Springs Reserves side, claiming an 18-point win. The hosts registered their first win of the Division 2 competition, and the first under new coach Dave Rouvray.

Sarah Golding and Kirra Grimes were instrumental for the Bulldogs, whilst Reggee Auld and Ashlee Portelli stood strong for the Lakers.

Werribee Centrals hosted the 2021 Minor Premiers Manor Lakes at Galvin Park, surprising the side with a blockbuster opening quarter. By the final siren, the Centurions side had secured a 34-point win, with Sam Kloet and Sarah Tabone named amongst the best.

Round 1 continued early on Saturday morning at Yarraville Oval, between the Eagles and suburban neighbours Spotswood. Spotswood controlled the play from siren to siren, claiming a dominant 58-point win over Yarraville Seddon. Chloe Weston-Sirett kicked four for the Wolves, whilst Jacqueline Mcclurg and Ann-Marie Geary were among the best for the Eagles.

Braybrook/Albanvale registered their first win of the season over visitors Laverton at Pennell Reserve. Natasha Combs and Tiana Jackson each kicked four goals for their side in the huge 141-point win.

West Footscray ran over North Sunshine in a 71-point win at Dempster Park. Emily Gillespie shone in front of goals — kicking three on debut for the Roosters; while Tashania Knapp Sirengo was a standout for the Road Runners side.

To close out the weekend, Point Cook Centrals travelled to Wyndhamvale South Oval to take on the Falcons, claiming a definitive 144-point win. Sharni Currie opened her scoring account for the year, bagging six goals for the Sharks side.
