LAKERS SPOIL WOLVES UNBEATEN RUN

After yet another pandemic pause, this weekend saw the VU Polytechnic Senior Women’s Competition resume, with Divisions 1 and 2 returning to play for Round 14. A wild wind wreaked havoc on scoring shots across the round, and arguably the biggest upset of the season played out on Taylors Run Oval as Caroline Springs put a full stop on Spotswood’s unbeaten run.
The Lakers were out to make a statement as they took to the field on Saturday morning, playing as a tight, well-drilled unit for four quarters of the game. Carissa Whiley and Marissa Selaidinakos stood strong and Alex O’Shea kicked three goals for her side. Not even the wind favoured Spotswood, with Caroline Springs locking in for a definitive 30-point victory and finally ending the Wolves’ winning streak.
Point Cook hosted Manor Lakes for a Friday night hit-out under lights, with the visitors keeping their opposition scoreless. The Storm had six individual scorers who kicked a combined 11 goals, and Jaimi Paten continued her good form to be named in best.
To round out Division 1, Hoppers Crossing were dominant in their performance against Werribee Centrals, keeping the Centurions goalless. Olivia Burrow and Kayla Koropeckyj had a strong showing and kicked three and two a piece for the Warriors.
Division 2 had its first taste of Thursday night footy in a furious battle between Point Cook Centrals and Yarraville Seddon at Featherbrook Reserve. The Sharks bolted out of the gate at the opening siren and led the Eagles by two goals by the first break. Yarraville Seddon fought back, and by the fourth term pulled away for the win. Brit Salt and Jessie-Louise Gathercole proved particularly dangerous, each kicking two goals for the Eagles.
An early start out at Pennell Reserve on Saturday saw Braybrook/Albanvale register their third win for the season, in a 19-point victory over local rivals North Sunshine. Caitlyn Crameri put on a dominant display, bagging three majors, and was named amongst her side’s best.
To complete the round, West Footscray banked another definitive win over Wyndhamvale, rendering the Falcons scoreless in a 94-point victory. The game featured a surprising milestone, captain Kathleen Gannon finally broke her scoring drought, kicking her first major for the Roosters.
With just two rounds to play before finals, the results of the weekend see West Footscray maintain their position on the top of the Division 2 ladder, and Manor Lakes leapfrog over Spotswood to the top of Division 1.
