DISTRICTS IN A 1 POINT THRILLER

By CONNOR PAIN

Werribee Districts saved its best for last as they kicked four goals to zero in the final term to overcome a red-hot Yarraville Seddon 11.7(73) to 10.12(72).

Trailing by 27-points at the last change, the Tigers dug deep and held the visitors scoreless to rubberstamp their place as flag favourites.

The home side got the jump early with the game’s only first quarter goals as the Eagles managed five straight behinds.

The break helped Yarraville Seddon as they exploded in the second with five goals to one flipping the game entirely.

It continued after half time with another five Eagles goals extending their lead, Werribee entering the fourth with their biggest three-quarter time deficit faced this season.

Chris Gilham produced magic at the final break as his side roared back in a game that ultimately meant little to the minor premiers who finish the season five games clear on top of the ladder.

The one-point win might be the Tigers’ best this season and sets them up perfectly for their semi final date with Point Cook.

The Eagles will be disappointed to lose but heartened by their ability to lead and all but beat the premiership fancies.

They now face Altona with a spot in the preliminary finals on the line.

Caroline Springs produced a second half comeback to end a rollercoaster season with a three-point win against Altona.

Needing a big win to have any chance of making finals, the Lakers could just never get the required goals on the board.

Trailing by seven at the half, they fought back strongly after the restart but the 10.7(67) to 9.10(64) win wasn’t enough for the home side to jump Yarraville Seddon and make finals.

The loss means the Vikings need to go the long way if they’re to repeat as premiers.

Spotswood cruised to a 13.16(94) to 9.5(59) win against Point Cook Centrals, bouncing back from a disappointing loss in Round 17.

An opening term blitz that saw the Woodsmen up by seven goals after the first term was enough for the home side to get the 35-point win after their finals chances ended last week.

The Sharks fought back in the second half but it was too little too late.

Point Cook proved too strong for Hoppers Crossing, running out 77-points victors and finishing second on the ladder.

Nine Bulldogs hit the scoreboard in the 15.13(106) to 2.14(26) win.
