SENIOR NETBALL: ROUND 8 REVIEW
Each week we’ll be reviewing one match from all seven senior netball divisions, selecting one of the closer games or a key match in the context of the season. Read on to find out what took place across the courts in Round 8.
DIVISION 1 – Wyndhamvale Green v Spotswood Gold
In an electrifying encounter between Wyndhamvale Green and Spotswood Gold the latter emerging victorious 48-38. The match showcased intense competition, strategic gameplay, and some impressive skill from both teams. Spotswood capitalised on turnovers early and converted on the scoreboard before Wyndhamvale fought back valiantly with goal shooter Olivia Cawthray demonstrating accuracy and composure under pressure. The first half ended with Spotswood holding a seven-goal advantage, but the intensity heightened after the restart with Wyndhamvale pushing hard to close the gap. Their defensive pairing of Erin Jay (GK) and Kaylee Smith (GD) tightened their marking, making it difficult for Spotswood’s attackers to find open space. However, Spotswood’s cohesive teamwork and quick transitions between defence and attack allowed them to extend their lead, with Kimberley Philips (GS) and Naomi Parker (GA) displaying their premiership winning knowledge to help secure another win.
DIVISION 2 – Wyndhamvale Gold v Lakers 2
From the outset, Lakers 2 showed their intent with swift movement and precise passing, Natasha Labagnara (C) and Emily Dimevski (WA) displaying exceptional skills in controlling the midcourt play. Their coordination and strategic positioning allowed their team to dictate the tempo early on. Wyndhamvale struggled to break through the Lakers defence lead by GD Felicia Toleafoa, with turnovers proving costly. The first half ended with Lakers comfortably leading and Wyndhamvale needing a big second half. The third quarter saw Lakers continue their dominance, with their defence tightening even further. Wyndhamvale’s GS Avalon Philips faced increased pressure from Lakers GK Carlie Druitt resulting in fewer scoring opportunities. Despite Wyndhamvale’s efforts to regroup and adjust their strategy, Lakers maintained their momentum and the combination of solid defensive play and efficient scoring allowed them to extend their lead into the final term, Lakers recording a decisive victory with the final score 48-20.
DIVISION 3 – Glen Orden 3 v Lakers 3
Glen Orden started the match strongly, with Emily Evans (C) and Jasmine Paama (GA) leading the charge. Their cohesive play and accurate shooting allowed Glen Orden to build an early lead. Lakers GS Lauren Labagnara countered with her scoring prowess, however Glen Orden would lead 19-13 lead at halftime. Coach Low Pikerua halftime adjustments proved instrumental in a Lakers’ turnaround. His strategic advice and tactical changes reenergised Lakers’ players, enabling them to capitalise on Glen Orden’s weaknesses. In what was as a thrilling second half, Lakers’ resilience and adaptability ultimately prevailed as they delivered a top of the table upset winning 33-28.
DIVISION 4 – Lakers 4 v Laverton Gold
The match began with both teams displaying strong defensive structures and effective ball movement with Jasmine Oaks (GD) and Ashlee Moxey (GS) pivotal figures in Lakers 4’s gameplay. Oaks’ defensive prowess helped her side limit Laverton’s scoring opportunities, while Moxey’s accuracy in the shooting circle ensured Lakers 4 remained right in the game. The first half concluded with both teams evenly matched, setting the stage for a tense second half. As the game progressed into the second half, the intensity rose with both teams vying for the lead. Lakers continued to rely on Oaks’ defensive capabilities to thwart Laverton’s attacks, while Moxey maintained her consistency in converting goals. Laverton however, countered with resilient defence and strategic passing, ensuring the score remained close throughout. The match culminated in a dramatic final few minutes as both teams pushed for a decisive goal, but neither could break the deadlock. When the final whistle blew the two teams couldn’t be separated with the match ending in a draw, 28-28.
DIVISION 5 – PCCSC Nurse Sharks v Sunshine Waring
Sunshine Waring took control of the game from the initial stages thanks in part to Taylor Jane Barrett’s exceptional play at centre as her connection with Hallee Mauri in the shooting circle proved formidable, with Mauri consistently converting scoring opportunities. With Nurse Sharks’ defensive end being challenged and a disrupted offensive flow, Sunshine lead comfortably at the main break. In the second half, Nurse Sharks’ coach implemented several rolling substitutions in an attempt to rejuvenate their gameplay. Despite Nurse Sharks’ efforts to regroup, Sunshine continued to dominate possession and capitalise on turnovers. Barrett’s continued influence in midfield, coupled with Mauri’s scoring prowess, ensured Sunshine Waring maintained their lead until the end triumphing 38-21.
DIVISION 6 – Sunshine Toomey v Point Cook Red
Sunshine Toomey dominated their match against Point Cook, clinching a convincing victory with a final score of 19-9. The game highlighted Sunshine Toomey’s strong defensive play, led by WD Michelle Rampis and GD Zaidee Waldron contributing significantly to their success. Coach Mon Poliko’s strategic guidance and the team’s improved connections were evident throughout the match, highlighting Sunshine Toomey’s resurgence after previous struggles. The result bodes well for Sunshine Toomey’s confidence and momentum as they continue their season, while Point Cook will be keen to regroup and bounce back when they next take the court.
DIVISION 7 – Parkside 2 v West Footscray White
The match began with both teams showing plenty of tenacity and skill across the court. West Footscray GD Millie Bodman demonstrated exceptional defensive abilities, working tirelessly to disrupt Parkside’s shooting circle. Despite Bodman’s efforts, Parkside shooter Jye Dye, showcased accuracy and determination in converting goals. The connection between Dye and WA Millie Tucker was crucial in Parkside’s offensive strategy, allowing for quick swings and effective positioning around the circle edge. The first half concluded with Parkside holding a narrow lead. The intensity continued into the second half as both teams fought relentlessly for control. West Footscray tightened their defence further, however, Parkside’s teamwork and strategic passing enabled them to maintain their slight advantage on the scoreboard. Ultimately the combination of Dye’s consistent shooting and Tucker’s playmaking skills ensured Parkside came away victorious 18-16.
