ALBION BOOKS PLACE IN DIVISION 2 DECIDER

Albion are through to their second straight Division 2 Grand Final after defeating rivals Sunshine by four goals in Saturday’s Second Semi Final.

After having the first week of finals off, the competition’s top two teams faced off for the third time this season with the Cats continuing their unbeaten campaign with 10.8 (68) to 6.8 (44) win.

It was goal for goal early at Pennell Reserve, but Albion nailed a late major to take a five-point lead into quarter time before Sunshine closed the gap to a point at the main break after holding the Cats goalless in the second.

An Albion run of three straight goals midway through the third term gave the minor premiers a 21-point buffer with their advantage growing to 28 points following back-to-back majors.

Two goals in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter all but sealed the result for Albion but Sunshine weren’t without their chances although they could only muster 1.4 in the final term.

Despite the loss the Kangaroos’ season remains alive and they will now lineup in the Preliminary Final against Newport who overcame Wyndhamvale by 33-points on Sunday afternoon.

A four goal to none opening quarter was the perfect start for Newport and while the Falcons cut into the deficit slight in the second term, they were never able to make further inroads

Four more Newport goals in the third quarter gave the Panthers are 39-point lead ahead of the last and from there they were never troubled as they advanced 11.10 (76) to 6.7 (43).

In other grades Sunshine has booked its place in the Division 2 Reserves Grand Final following a 28-point win over Newport, while Albion was the winner of the Reserves knock-out Semi Final on Sunday with the Cats defeating the Suns by 46 points.

Newport and Albion will now clash for a place in the Grand Final.

Meanwhile, Sunshine’s Under 18 Division 2 side are also through to the last game of the season after beating West Footscray by 12 points.

The Roosters will play Point Cook Centrals this weekend for the other Grand Final spot after the Sharks enjoyed a 60-point win over Werribee Districts in their Semi Final.
