The St Vincent’s Private Hospital Werribee Senior Women’s competition kicked off on the weekend, with comprehensive wins the theme of Round 1.
It was an early start for Point Cook Centrals and Werribee Centrals, who went head-to-head at Windorah Way Reserve on Saturday morning.
It was always going to be a tough ask for the re-established Sharks team to go up against the defending premiers, with the Centurions running away with the game by 90 points.
Last season’s leading goal kicker Larissa Renaut opened her account early and finished with seven majors for the Centurions, whilst her Centrals teammate and last year’s league Best and Fairest, Jessica Spall was named best on ground for her side, with five goals to her name also.
Western Jets product Emma Davis (one goal) and Natasha Salisbury performed well for Point Cook Centrals and to be amongst their best.
West Footscray put on a clinic in their first official hit-out on Skinner Reserve, downing North Sunshine by a hefty 179 points.
Roosters’ debutants Janelle Sammut (seven goals) and Jess Mudie (six goals) were dangerous in attack, whilst Layla Dawkins was instrumental through the midfield.
Roadrunners captain Amy Duggan led by example, putting in a courageous performance across the ground, whilst teammate Liz Mercieca worked hard in defence.
At Caroline Springs Recreation Reserve, the Lakers took on Yarraville Seddon, earning the four points on home turf with an 11-goal victory over the Eagles.
The home side was boosted by the efforts of Nyomi Stowers and Jacinta Kondis, with the latter bagging four goals.
The match also saw Burnside Heights recruits Ebony and Brodie Stevens hit the scoreboard in their new club colours.
Phoebe McWilliams and Merrick Sheather performed well under pressure for the Eagles, each being named in the best.
The two sides also saw their Reserves go head-to-head in a twilight game in the EDFL Reserves competition, with Caroline Springs claiming victory by 70 points.
Mylee Lake starred for the Lakers, kicking five goals, while Kira Dawson bagged two goals for the Eagles with both players were named in the best for their respective teams.
In Saturday’s late fixture the Suns registered a first-up win, trumping Wyndhamvale by 51 points.
Sharni Currie (two goals) and Isabella Cutajar were the standouts for the home side, while their score was also boosted by a goal from Suns young-gun Bonnie Lea Brown.
Harper Sell and Mariah Burton were the Falcons’ best, with Burton nabbing two majors for the day.
