WARRIORS, WOODSMEN & WERRIBEE DISTRICTS MOVE TO 2-0

By Connor Pain |

Round 2 of the TIV Division 1 Senior Men’s seasons saw Werribee Districts prove its offensive credentials with a 22-point defeat of Yarraville Seddon in a high-scoring encounter.

Last year’s grand finalists trailed after the opening two quarters, but a blistering eight-goal third term flipped the game for good.

Young forward Jack Fletcher was the standout in attack with a game-high four majors in the 18.15 (123) to 15.11 (101) win.

Hoppers Crossing did its title as flag favourites no harm with a 19.10 (124) to 11.13 (79) win against Caroline Springs.

On the day they celebrated the unfurling of the 2024 WFNL Division 1 premiership flag, the Warriors led wire to wire, kicking away after a solid first term saw the home side ahead by just two points.

Able to move the ball from defence to attack with ease, the reigning premiers blew the game open in the second with a six goal to one term.

In hot conditions the Warriors reeling off six straight majors over the second and third quarters and no minor comeback could halt the charge, the hosts cruising to the 45-point victory thanks in large part to Ryan Kitchen’s seven goals along with five majors from Harry Maguire.

The Warriors will face Point Cook as one of four teams to play on Good Friday.

Albion will head into their clash with Parkside on Good Friday in strong spirits after collecting their first win of 2025, downing Sunshine 17.12 (114) to 13.9 (87).

Exacting some revenge for last year’s defeat in the Division 2 decider, the Cats started slowly but led at the final three breaks as they ran out 27-point winners.

Cody Bench starred down back while Daniel Rosenzweig capitalised up forward booting seven goals.

Newport bounced back from its heartbreaking loss last week with a stirring five-point triumph against Point Cook to claim its first ever Division 1 win.

With both sides looking for a response after defeats in Round 1, the Panthers proved the better side in the moments that matter, as they survived a late push to win 14.5 (89) to 12.12 (84).

It was a much-improved performance for the Bulldogs who handed debuts to three Under 18 players in Mason Grant, Lucas Hayes and Oscar May.

Spotswood put Point Cook Centrals to the sword in a comprehensive 19.18 (132) to 3.8 (26) win.

It was a consistent four quarter performance from the home team at Donald McLean Reserve with Sam Cross finished with six goals as the Woodsmen increased their lead at every change.

Altona kickstarted its season, holding on for a narrow two-point win over Parkside on Saturday night at Merv Hughes Oval.

The Vikings were aided by an early buffer and the efforts of recruit Connor Bulley who contributed three majors in the low scoring, 9.8 (62) to 8.12 (60) triumph.

Altona, Caroline Springs, Newport, Point Cook Centrals, Spotswood, Sunshine, Werribee Districts and Yarraville Seddon, all have a bye this week.
