DIVISION 2 MEN: ROUND 1 WRAP

By Rod Carpenter

Wyndhamvale def Suns

Wyndhamvale delivered a dominant four-quarter performance to defeat the Suns by 53 points, 14.13 (97) to 6.8 (44), under lights on Saturday night to kick start their flag defence.

The home side set the tone early, kicking three goals in the opening term while restricting the Suns to just two behinds. Their pressure around the ball and clean transition into attack allowed them to build an early advantage and take control of field position.

Wyndhamvale extended their lead in the second quarter with a strong attacking display, adding five goals. Their ability to win clearances and move the ball efficiently inside 50 proved too much for the Suns defence, opening up a 30-point lead at halftime.

The third quarter saw more of the same, with Wyndhamvale maintaining their intensity and continuing to control possession. While the Suns showed patches of improvement, they struggled to contain Wyndhamvale’s forward entries and couldn’t close the gap.

In the final term, the reigning premiers put the result beyond doubt, kicking four more goals to seal an emphatic win. Their consistency across all four quarters, combined with strong midfield dominance and forward efficiency, was the key to a comprehensive and well-deserved victory.

Tarneit def by Albanvale

Albanvale secured a hard-fought 16-point victory over Tarneit, 6.16 (52) to 5.6 (36), in a low-scoring contest where pressure and missed opportunities played a major role.

The opening half was a tight defensive battle, with both sides struggling to generate consistent scoring. Albanvale held a narrow lead at quarter time, kicking 1.4 to Tarneit’s 1.1, and neither side was able to add to their tally in a stagnant second quarter, highlighting the intense pressure and lack of clean ball movement.

The game opened up slightly in the third term, with both teams finding more opportunities going forward. Albanvale began to assert control around the contest adding three majors, but their inaccuracy in front of goal prevented them from fully capitalising on their dominance. Tarneit stayed within reach but found it difficult to convert their chances.

In the final quarter Tarneit pushed to close the gap showing resilience and effort. However, Albanvale did enough to maintain their lead, despite continuing to miss gettable shots. Ultimately, the ability of the Cobras to generate more scoring opportunities proved the difference, although their inefficiency kept Tarneit in the contest longer than expected.

Western Rams def Laverton

Western Rams held off a determined Laverton outfit to secure a 15-point victory, 9.14 (68) to 8.5 (53), in a contest that tightened as the game progressed.

The Rams started strongly controlling in the opening quarter with solid defensive pressure while limiting Laverton to four behinds. Their efficiency around stoppages and cleaner ball use helped them build an early 10-point lead.

In the second quarter, Western Rams extended their advantage with a dominant period of play kicking four goals and creating repeat inside 50 opportunities. Although inaccurate in front of goal, they still managed to push the margin out to 27 points at halftime, leaving Laverton with work to do.

The Magpies responded well after the break, lifting their intensity and converting their chances more efficiently. Their five-goal third quarter brought them back into the contest, reducing the margin and shifting momentum.

The final term was a tight battle, with both sides creating opportunities. Laverton continued to apply pressure, but Western Rams defence held firm at key moments. Despite kicking more behinds, the Rams did enough to maintain their lead, the home team’s strong first half proved the difference in a hard-fought win.

Sunshine Heights def by West Footscray

West Footscray showcased its attacking prowess to defeat Sunshine Heights by 58 points, 18.15 (123) to 9.11 (65), overcoming an early deficit with a powerful response across the final three quarters.

Sunshine Heights started strongly, controlling the opening term with clean ball movement and efficient forward entries to take a 12-point lead at quarter time. Their pressure around the contest and ability to capitalise on opportunities giving them early momentum.

However, the game shifted dramatically in the second quarter as West Footscray took control. They piled on five goals and nine behinds, generating repeat inside 50 entries and dominating territory. Despite some inaccuracy in front of goal, they still managed to build a 22-point lead at halftime.

West Footscray continued to assert their dominance in the third term, extending their lead with strong midfield play. Sunshine Heights fought hard to stay within reach but struggled to contain West Footscray’s ball movement. The final quarter saw the Roosters completely take over, kicking eight goals to blow the margin out. Their fitness and depth proved too much, sealing an impressive and commanding victory.

Braybrook def by North Footscray

North Footscray produced a strong second-half performance to defeat Braybrook by 24 points, 11.8 (74) to 7.8 (50), in a game that was tightly contested early.

The opening quarter was evenly matched, with both sides applying pressure and sharing scoring opportunities. North Footscray held a narrow one-point lead at the first break, before edging further ahead in the second term. Their ability to capitalise on forward entries saw them take an eight-point advantage into halftime, while Braybrook struggled to generate consistent scoring chances.

The third quarter proved decisive, as North Footscray took control of the contest. They piled on four goals while restricting Braybrook to just two behinds, dominating possession and field position. Their midfield lifted significantly, winning key stoppages and driving the ball forward with greater efficiency.

Braybrook showed resilience in the final quarter, kicking four goals and attempting to close the gap, but North Footscray responded when needed to maintain their lead. In the end, North Footscray’s ability to control the game after halftime and dominate the third quarter was the difference in a well-earned victory, while former Melbourne and Collingwood defender Lynden Dunn starred in attack with five majors.
