Altona def by Caroline Springs
Caroline Springs have delivered a strong second half performance on the road, to defeated Altona by 75 points in Pat Cronin Foundation Round and the Round 4 Match of the Day.
Aided by the wind the visitors set the tone early, keeping Altona scoreless in the opening term while scoring 3.4 to establish immediate control. Although Altona responded with two goals in the second quarter, Caroline Springs maintained their composure and took a 13-point lead into halftime despite missed opportunities.
The game broke open in the third term, as the Lakers produced a devastating burst of eight goals to none. Their midfield dominance and relentless forward pressure overwhelmed the Vikings, turning a competitive contest into a one-sided affair by three quarter time.
Caroline Springs continued their momentum in the final term, finishing strongly to secure a convincing 15.16 (106) to 5.1 (31) victory. Malik Elfakahani starred up forward with five goals in a best-on-ground performance, while Steven Kyriazis added three in a dangerous attacking partnership.
For Altona, William Crittenden fought hard and finished with three goals, but the home side struggled to generate consistent opportunities against a well-structured Caroline Springs outfit. Crittenden and Caroline Springs captain Cooper Pepi were the recipients of the Pat Cronin Foundation Round medals awarded to a player from each team.
Werribee Districts def Point Cook
Werribee Districts overcome a sluggish start to power past Point Cook by 55 points in an impressive display that showcased their ability to respond under pressure while also highlighting their attacking prowess.
Point Cook came out firing, kicking four first-quarter goals to open up a 15-point lead and put the home side under early pressure. However, the reigning premiers responded strongly in the second term, lifting their intensity around the contest, adding four goals to take a six-point advantage into halftime.
The game turned decisively in the third quarter as Werribee Districts dominated territory and ball use, slamming on six majors to two to break the game open. Carrying that momentum into the final term, Werribee Districts finished emphatically with seven goals, sealing a commanding victory, 19.17 (131) to 11.10 (76).
Daniel Nielson was again unstoppable up forward against the Bulldogs booting eight goals. His dominance was well supported by a midfield group that consistently delivered quality supply led by Harrison White (43 disposals), Seth Clayont (33) and Dillon Viojo-Rainbow (29).
While Point Cook’s early momentum couldn’t be sustained against a surging Werribee Districts outfit, for the Bulldogs 17-year-old Archer Crockford was the standout with 30 disposals and three goals.
Albion def Point Cook Centrals
Albion made it back-to-back wins, blowing by Point Cook Centrals by 56 points in a high scoring and dominant display built on a devastating third quarter.
The opening term was tightly contested, with both sides trading goals before Point Cook Centrals edged ahead by a single point at quarter time. Albion responded strongly in the second stanza, lifting their intensity and efficiency going forward to open up a 25-point lead at the main break.
What followed was a third quarter blitz that broke the game wide open. Albion piled on nine goals in a stunning burst, overwhelming Point Cook Centrals with relentless pressure, clean ball movement and clinical finishing. The margin ballooned to 56 points by three quarter time, effectively ending the contest. From there Albion maintained control in the final term to secure a convincing 18.11 (119) to 10.3 (63) win.
Judd Brewster starred with five goals in a standout performance, while Cooper Muir and Daniel Rosenzweig each added four in a potent and well-structured forward line. Meanwhile, Caleb McPherson and Josh Bench were unable to contained in midfield collecting 40 and 37 possessions respectively.
For Point Cook Centrals, Cooper Langan, Luke Henderson and Joshua Grech each kicked two goals, but their efforts were unable to limit Albion’s attacking wave.
Newport def by Hoppers CrossingÂ
Hoppers Crossing have held off a spirited Newport fightback to secure a 19-point victory in an entertaining contest in Round 4.
The visitors came out with intent, exploding out of the blocks with six first quarter goals to open up a commanding 29-point lead. Their clean ball movement and forward efficiency had Newport under immediate pressure.
Newport responded strongly in the second term, finding more composure going inside 50 and cutting the margin back to 27 points by halftime. The momentum continued to swing after the main break, with the Panthes steadily chipping away as the contest tightened heading into the final quarter.
Despite Newport’s surge, Hoppers Crossing steadied when it mattered most. Their ability to respond to scoreboard pressure and convert at crucial moments ensured they maintained control, coming away with a hard-fought 13.11 (89) to 10.10 (70) victory.
Ahmed Saad was the standout for Newport with a superb six-goal performance to keep his side in the contest and provide a constant threat up forward.
Hoppers Crossing’s even contribution across the ground proved decisive, as did their fast start which ultimately created the buffer needed to withstand Newport’s challenge. Arki Van Wills, Braden Ferrari and Tex Milroy (three goals) were among the key contributors for the Warriors best.
Sunshine def Parkside
Sunshine edged out Parkside in a thrilling four-point victory, holding their nerve in a evenly matched contest that went down to the wire.
Parkside made the early running, kicking four first-quarter goals to take a 12-point lead, before extending their advantage to 20 points by halftime in a fast-paced and attacking encounter. Their ability to capitalise on opportunities kept Sunshine chasing the game early.
The Kangaroos responded strongly after the main break, producing a dominant third quarter to swing momentum. They piled on four majors and, despite some costly inaccuracy, managed to edge in front by two points at the final change. The final term was a tense battle, with both sides trading goals in a high-pressure finish. Sunshine’s composure in front of goal proved decisive, as they did just enough to secure the result, 13.18 (96) to 13.14 (92).
Noah Smallacombe was influential for the home side while Chase Sanders led the way with four goals with Charlie Oughtred and Mark Mazzeo each adding three in strong forward displays. For Parkside, Jackson Barrett, Tom Condon, Zachary Morris and Jordan Filakis each contributed two goals in an even team effort.
The win highlights Sunshine’s improvement this season as they moved to 2-2, while the result for Parkside ended their run of two straight wins.
Yarraville Seddon def SpotswoodÂ
Yarraville Seddon has maintained its recent stronghold in the Battle of the Bridge producing a high octane attacking display to defeat Spotswood by 36 points in an entertaining shootout.
The Eagles burst out of the blocks, piling on eight first-quarter goals to open up a commanding 43-point lead, with their forward pressure and ball movement overwhelming Spotswood early. However, the Woodsmen responded brilliantly in the second term, kicking eight goals of their own to close the gap to just seven points at halftime in a dramatic momentum swing.
After the main break, Yarraville Seddon regained control, tightening up defensively while continuing to capitalise on their scoring opportunities. A six-goal third quarter allowed them to stretch the margin back out, taking a 47-point lead into the final term. Spotswood refused to go away and mounted another challenge with five final quarter goals, but the damage had already been done as the Eagles held firm to secure a 20.16 (136) to 16.4 (100) victory.
In the end Yarraville Seddon’s ability to dominate the clearances was a key factor in the result, with Kane Sexton starring with five goals in a brilliant attacking performance, while Josh Kingston added three in a strong supporting role.
For Spotswood, James Cleaver was excellent finishing with four goals and Harley Walshe added three in a spirited effort.
