WILD WEATHER PLAGUES THE WEEKEND’S MATCHES

By RHYS WOOSNAM

Round 8 of the 2018 season was wet, wild and windy, however there were a few teams that still managed to assert their dominance and continue rich veins of form.

As we begin to hit the half way point of the year, two clubs remain undefeated, and their superb performances do not look like stopping any time soon. Both the Eagles and the Bulldogs notched up their seventh successive victories for the year, albeit with incredibly varied score lines.

For Yarraville-Seddon, it was another display of their multi-pronged attack as well as their consistency and ability to run out games till completion. They trounced North Footscray by 83-points, building on their lead quarter by quarter.

It was only inaccuracy from the Eagles, 16 goals and 17 behinds, which prevented them from truly putting their opponents to the sword. Nonetheless, it was a tremendous effort that saw contributions from Corey Salvador (four goals), Brandon Lester (three) and Eddie Ford (two).

Point Cook on the other hand, were required to eke out a 38-point win in a dour and low-scoring contest that saw just a single goal scored before the main break. In trying conditions, the Bulldogs missed a number of opportunities throughout the match to finish it, kicking a less than spectacular 5 goals and 15 behinds. Ultimately, Point Cook’s defence was a major element which led them to victory, as they kept Manor Lakes goalless for the entire game.

Newport Power had a strong win, beating West Footscray by 40-points and maintaining their spot in the top four. It was a tense struggle for the majority of the day, before the Power kicked away in the last quarter to record their fourth win for the year.

The Power was supported by four goals each to Youssef El Hawli and Belal Mesto, while Darcy McCallum continued his excellent form in 2018 booting five for the Roosters. Elsewhere, Parkside easily accounted for Albanvale, taking the win by 58-points at Robert Bruce Oval.

Next week’s action will see Newport face off with fellow top four team Point Cook in the match of the round. North Footscray will take on Manor Lakes, West Footscray will attempt to topple Albanvale, and the ladder-leaders Yarravile-Seddon travel to Parkside.
