FINAL FOUR SET FOR PREMIERSHIP TEST

The WRFL will crown its first set of premiers for 2019 on Friday night, as the Division 1 and 2 Victoria University WRFL Netball Grand Finals are played.

Spotswood Green and Manor Lakes will battle it out at VU Sports Stadium at Whitten Oval at 7pm before Point Cook Centrals 1 and Point Cook Blue go head-to-head at 8.20pm.

Spotswood Green coach Claire Slattery said holding the Premiership Cup at the end of the game would be great reward for effort for her team.

“We can’t wait for Friday night,” Slattery said.

“We are really looking forward to facing Manor Lakes, who had a great win in the Preliminary final against Sunshine.

“The possibility of winning the Grand Final is something we have talked about as a team over the season. We have kept our eyes on the prize, but really tried to have some fun along the way.”

Slattery said the aim this week is to contain our excitement and manage the nerves.

“We will take a moment to reflect on how lucky we are to be in this position and to recognise how far we have come over the year, and really take a moment to recognise that no matter what the result is on Friday night, we have a lot to be happy about and a lot to look forward to,” she said.

“This group of girls has a great mix of youth and experience across the court and they all bring something different and important.”

Manor Lakes’ Kristy Wilson said she didn’t expect to be playing in a Grand Final at the start of the season.

“To take out the win would be an amazing accomplishment, however we are playing a well-structured team in Spotswood,” she said.

“They say Grand Finals can really go anyway and I know we are going to give it a red-hot go, but we have already won. We made it to the end and that is an achievement.”

Point Cook Blue are the defending champions in Division 1, having won the inaugural Victoria University WRFL title last season.

Point Cook defeated Sunshine in last week’s Preliminary Final to book a date with Point Cook Centrals in the final game of the season.

Point Cook netball coordinator Samantha Pruscino said the team was excited to be a part of the Grand Final for the second straight year.

“With new clubs and several new teams this year and to still be grand finalists makes us really proud,” she said.

“To cap off the season with another premiership would be great. The girls have worked hard and deserve the reward.”

They have the difficult task of playing against the Sharks, who have not lost a game in 2019.
