BLOCKBUSTER FORTNIGHT OF FOOTY FOR WOMEN’S COMP

By KEL ROWE

It’s been a busy fortnight for the teams of the VU Polytechnic Seniors Women’s Competition, with two huge games celebrating NAIDOC Week, followed a blockbuster weekend of footy from the Division 1 and 2 teams in Round 10.

In a twilight match celebrating the start of NAIDOC Week, the Point Cook Doggies donned their inaugural Indigenous Guernsey designed by player Russellina Puruntatameri; suffering a narrow 4-point loss to the Division 2 Caroline Springs side. The Lakers were boosted to the win by goals from Jordin Williamson, Chantelle Paris-Webb and Jamie Ritchie.

In Division 1, Caroline Springs travelled to Yarraville Oval, and claimed the 23-point victory in their NAIDOC hit out over Yarraville Seddon, with Charlize Sidoni bagging two majors and Kyah Tessari influential around the ground. Chloe Lazzaro and Jac Mcclurg performed under pressure for the Eagles.

To kick things off this weekend, Point Cook Centrals hosted Werribee Centrals in a Friday night clash under lights. The Centurions continued their dominant run in the back half of the season, with Larissa Renaut and Kyleisha Kinces each kicking four majors in the 121-point win. The match also celebrated the 50 game milestones for Shark’s Kirra Grimes and Sarah Daw.

Division 1 side Caroline Springs backed up their NAIDOC weekend win with another over the Parkside Spurs on Saturday morning, kicking away for a 29-point victory. Jacinta Kondis was a major contributor for the Lakers, registering 3 goals and earning time in best, whilst Riaana Sadler was best on for the Spurs.

Over at Converse Oval, Spotswood Division 1 lodged a comprehensive 84-point victory over suburban rivals Yarraville Seddon, despite windy conditions. Kensley Ward and Maddison Cooper each kicked 3 for the Wolves, whilst Rachel Culvenor and Alanna Porter were named amongst the best for the Eagles.

The Division 2 Spotswood side travelled to Pennell Reserve to take on Braybrook, locking in a 60-point win over their hosts. Ruby Mcdowell kicked the Brookers’ lone major, and earned time in best, whilst Temeika Cathery and Elissia Natale each bagged 3 goals for the Wolves.

Wyndhamvale continued to build on their percentage as ladder leaders of the Division 2 competition, running over Nth Sunshine in a 118-point drubbing. Kellee Mcintosh bagged a massive 10 goals, despite the wind running amuck across the ground, and was named in best for the Falcons; whilst Aaliyah Tye was influential under the pump for the Roadrunners.

To round out the weekend, West Footscray hosted Laverton in a twilight match at Shorten Reserve, with the Roosters securing a 41-point win over the Pies. West Footscray’s Kimberley Plummer celebrated her milestone 50th game in style, with a goal and time in best, whilst Ruth Walker and Magan Ristic-Keena kicked the only majors for Laverton.
