EAGLES CLAIM BIG UPSET

By KEL ROWE

Round 4 of the VU Polytechnic Senior Women’s Competition offered the first true taste of winter footy weather — with rain and icy temperatures adding an extra element to the games across the weekend. In Division 1, Yarraville Seddon claimed an upset win, whilst Spotswood and Wyndamvale kept clean sheets in Division 2.

Wyndhamvale continued their winning ways, locking in a 24-point victory over Point Cook. The Falcons have now registered 4 wins on the trot, and Friday night’s game was no different, with Harmoni Fonua and Molly Chant proving influential for their side.

Elsewhere, Point Cook Centrals travelled to Converse Oval to take on Division 1 powerhouse Spotwood, with the Wolves keeping their visitors scoreless in a 148-point drubbing.

The Sharks were saved from a greater score difference thanks to the repeat defensive efforts of Mary Daw and D’Koda Lee-Feeney. Olivia Burrow and Johanna Gregory piled on the points for Spotwood, each kicking a bag, with Jacinta Reid wreaking havoc around the ground.

On Saturday morning, proceedings kicked off in Division 1 with Parkside Spurs going down to Werribee Centrals by 5-goals. Jemma Stokes hit the scoreboard for the Spurs, and earned time in best, whilst Khayle Forsyth bagged 2 individual goals for the Centurions.

In the final game for Division 1, Yarraville Seddon staged a surprise upset over reigning premiers Caroline Springs. Winning by just 10-points, the tightly contested game saw Claire Rollinson and Madeleine Patterson star for the Eagles, with the latter nabbing two majors.

In Division 2, Laverton hosted Spotswood, with the side falling short by 11-points to their visitors at the final siren. Spotswood fired early, but the defensive pressure of the Magpies kept the Wolves quiet in the back half of the game, restricting them to just 2-points. Hayley O’Reilly starred for Laverton, whilst Caitlyn Gashi was influential for Spotswood.

North Sunshine went head-to-head with West Footscray, with the Roosters running over the Roadrunners in a 145-point victory. Shanaye Benbow was the sole goal scorer for the home side, whilst Jemma Hay and Emily Gillespie were prolific in front of goals, kicking 5 and 6 majors respectively.

In the final game of the Round 4 fixture, the Caroline Springs Reserves took on Braybrook, winning by 27-points. Lakers’ Playing-coach Alisha Fowler snagged 2 goals in the win, and Allayah Stowers was best on ground for the Brookers.
