EAGLES SURE UP THIRD SPOT WITH VICTORY OVER LAKERS
By Connor Pain |
Yarraville Seddon proved too good for Caroline Springs, a four-goal final quarter the key to the 14.14 (98) to 11.12 (78) win.
The Eagles were all over the Lakers early and took the first lead, but the visitors weren’t deterred despite their first major not coming until more than 15 minutes into the first term.
A slim quarter time deficit grew quickly as Yarraville Seddon took control in the second, five goals to one seeing the home side ahead at halftime thanks to tenacious pressure and sharp ball movement forward.
The break did wonders for Caroline Springs, who turned up their own pressure and were able to move the ball from defence to attack with ease.
Goals to Steven Kyriazis, Lewis Tudor and Ben Caluzzi had the Lakers right back in the game.
A goal within 15 seconds of the fourth quarter proved a huge boon for the home side, as the last term proved to be all theirs.
A slick running goal to Michael Selsby the highlight as the Eagles ran out 20-point victors and sit just 0.21 percent from second ahead of tantalising clash with Werribee Districts in Round 13.
The Lakers face no easier task at home hosting reigning premiers Hoppers Crossing.
Parkside were made to work by Sunshine in their 25-point win, keeping the Magpies’ finals chances alive.
Ahead at every break, the win wasn’t sowed up until the final term, as the hosts pushed a 10-point advantage at the final turn into a 15.11 (101) to 12.4 (76) triumph.
Stuart Purves and Ethan Dotchin worked hard for the Kangaroos as the remained within striking distance for much of the day after making the most of their goal scoring opportunities.
Tom Condon led the way with four goals for Parkside as they look to make it two in a row when they hit the road to face Altona, while Sunshine face former Division 2 foe and rivals Albion.
Josh Pickess continued his rich vein of form with four majors in Hoppers Crossing’s 12.19 (91) to 6.12 (48) win over Altona.
The reigning premiers trailed early and again had trouble converting, but a seven goal to one second half was enough to see the Warriors home.
Jye Formosa and Colby Redpath were important for the Vikings early as they led by eight points at quarter time before their advantage dissipated in the second term.
Spotswood sent Newport crashing back to earth with a comprehensive 16.22 (118) to 5.5 (35) victory.
James Cleaver was brilliant with 35 disposals and 10 clearances while Jack Charleston booted a season-high four goals as the Woodsmen continue to hold on to fifth spot.
Ahead for Spotswood is a date with Point Cook Centrals, while Newport hosts Point Cook.
Daniel Nielson reclaimed the lead on top of the competition’s goalkicking leaderboard in Werribee Districts’ 21.14 (140) to 3.7 (25) rout of Point Cook.
Harrison White and Josh Kellett were also strong performers as the visitors blew the game open with a 10 goal to one second quarter after a slow start to the game.
Albion did as they pleased in downing Point Cook Centrals by 112-points at JR Parsons Reserve.
Cooper Muir was one of five multiple goal kickers for the Cats finishing with a season-best five majors in the 25.15 (165) to 8.5 (53), while Jonathon O’Brien dominated in the ruck after missing the previous week.
The Sharks were again best served by Mitch Palma.
