EAGLES VICTORIOUS IN BATTLE OF THE BRIDGE

By Connor Pain |

Yarraville Seddon continued its good start to the TIV Division 1 Senior Men’s season cruising to a 15.14 (104) to 6.15 (63) derby win over Spotswood, a complete four-quarter performance giving the visitors early season bragging rights.

Led by Tyson Brazel up forward (five goals) and Josh Helliwell in defence (Eagles winner of Pat Cronin Foundation Medal), the visitors were in control from the opening bounce.

A stout defence led by Helliwell showed up early, but it was the visitors slick ball movement that shone through out the Battle of the Bridge contest at Donald McLean Reserve.

A two-goal quarter time lead ballooned to 33 points by halftime as Yarraville Seddon put the foot down despite an injury to the athletic Lachlan Green ending his day at the main break.

Brazel found a partner in crime up front in young forward Wil Kliszewski (four goals) whose hands were like glue all day.

The 41-point triumph puts the Eagles into second on the ladder ahead of another clash with a close rival in Round 5, this time against Newport.

Defender Nathan Haylock battled hard for the Woodsmen and received the Pat Cronin Foundation Medal for his side.

Spotswood face another tough test when they travel to face Hoppers Crossing.

Werribee Districts used a four goal to zero opening term to ride their way to a less-than-comfortable 15-point win against Caroline Springs.

After another strong start from the home team the Lakers trailed by just four points at halftime.

Despite conceding 10 goals over the second and third terms, Werribee Districts locked down when it mattered most, holding the Lakers to just a solitary goal in the last quarter, doing enough to remain undefeated with a 13.14 (92) to 11.11 (77) triumph.

The ladder leaders now face Altona in an enticing matchup, while Caroline Springs host Albion in the WFNL Match of the Day.

Joel Menadue (five goals) and Connor Bulley (four) combined for nine majors in Altona’s strong 49-point win against Point Cook Centrals.

In front at every break, the Vikings were at their defensive best but managed to bring their firepower in front of goal as they recorded their highest score of the season in the 14.12 (96) to 7.8 (50) victory.

Daniel Strnak was terrific for the hosts kicking four goals in a best on ground performance.

The Sharks will look to arrest a slow start when they take on Parkside this week.

In a battle of promoted sides, Newport proved too good against Sunshine thanks to a seven-goal to two-goal third quarter, putting the game beyond doubt before running out 18.10 (118) to 11.6 (72) winners.

Mustapha Mesto was a standout while Omar Saad bagged five goals to help propel the Panthers to their second win of the year.

In matches played on Good Friday, Hoppers Crossing and Albion survived late scares to claim the points.

The Warriors held off Point Cook, 12.6 (78) to 11.8 (74) as young gun Lucas Fisher starred in just his fourth game of senior football.

Meanwhile, the Cats edged by Parkside 13.9 (87) to 11.17 (83) in Patrick Savage’s club record breaking 445th game, with Daniel Rosenzweig one of the top performers with four goals.
