FINAL QUARTER BLITZ FOR LAKERS
By JAMES ORUBA
Round 13 of the Western Region Football League TIV Under 19 competition saw two interesting encounters, as each week further clarifies the heavyweights of the competition.
In perhaps the more entertaining of the two encounters, it took a 4 goal final quarter for Caroline Springs to beat Werribee Districts 11.7. (73) to 7.8. (50).
The first half was evenly paced, as both sides traded blows back and forth. At the main break, both Werribee and the Lakers were locked on 35 apiece.
The third quarter continued to be a tight tussle between both sides. Led by the brilliance of Darcy Phillips and Lachlan Rainbow, Werribee dared to produce a stunning upset as they entered the final break with a slim 3 point lead.
However, as good sides do, Caroline Springs were able to find another gear and surge past their valiant opponents with a 23 point victory.
For the Lakers, Jacob Vella kicked 3 majors, whilst Jy Lambley contributed with 2.
The victory sees the Lakers remain in third spot on the ladder, whilst Werribee Districts remain in fourth, three games adrift.
In the other contest that took place, Hoppers Crossing flexed their muscle against a hapless Point Cook outfit, running out 96 point winners 14.20. (104) to 1.2. (8).
The result could have been more lopsided if it weren’t for inaccurate goal kicking, as the Warriors registered 34 scoring shots to 3.
The clash between the two sides was essentially over at quarter time, as the Warriors registered 6 goals to none in an emphatic statement of a first quarter.
For the Warriors, Radwan Haddara registered 4 majors whilst Riley Fisher also added 3.
Lachlan Grant and Brendan Neville were also a major contributing factor towards the 96 point victory, as they provided polished ball movement throughout the middle of the ground.
For Point Cook, Joshua Ullrich contributed their solitary goal, and probably was their best player on a dour occasion for the bulldogs.
Ladder-leaders Altona had the bye, and will look to resume their campaign against Point Cook in Round 14.
