FLYING START TO WOMEN’S SEASON

Round 1 of the Victoria University Polytechnic WRFL Women’s competition got off to a flying start, as the competition welcomed four new teams.
With some tightly contested matches, and some convincing wins, the 2019 season is looking to excite fans and provide some good contests throughout the year.
West Footscray kicked off the season, hosting Braybrook on Friday night, coming away with a convincing win, keeping the newcomers goalless.
The Roosters started strong, with a two-goal to zero first quarter setting the standard for the rest of the match. They could have done a lot more damage too, with 18 scoring shots to the Brookers’ just two.
Mia Sherry kicked four of West Footscray’s seven goals.
Tarneit and Laverton continued their competitive match-up, but it was the Magpies who got the win, leading by just three points at the final siren.
Despite being down by 4 points at the final break, Laverton were able to keep Tarneit scoreless in the final term to get the win with a goal from Ashlee Hika, the sealer to get them over the line.
Werribee Centrals got their season of to a strong start, thrashing North Sunshine by 58 points. They started strong, keeping North Sunshine scoreless in the first quarter and getting four major scores on the board early.
While they lacked accuracy in the second, they more than made up for it in the second half, with a five goal third term.
Chloe Musgrove kicked four goals, while Stacey Kaa kicked three, and Kaitlin Judd was outstanding.
Newcomers, Yarraville Seddon, put up a good fight against Point Cook Centrals, but couldn’t match it with the Sharks over four quarters.
At half time, the Eagles were down by just 14 points, but they just weren’t able to make up ground in the second half. The Sharks ran away with it in the final quarter, kicking three goals to just one
Jaime Nankiville starred for the Sharks, kicking four goals, while Sharni Currie kicked two.
