GRIEVES & FIELD JOIN AFLW RANKS
Former Western Football Netball League players Sierra Grieves and Lou-Lou Field have had their AFLW dreams realised thanks to Richmond and Carlton.
Monday night’s AFLW Draft saw the Tigers select Yarraville Seddon talent Grieves with pick 11, while Field, a product of Werribee Districts who also played with Flemington Juniors and Yarraville Seddon was drafted to the Blues with selection 46.
Both players have starred for the Western Jets in recent seasons and were members of the Vic Metro team that won the National Championships this year.
In a standout 2024, Grieves was named the Player of the National Championships and claimed Vic Metro’s Most Valuable Player award while going on to win the Western Jets Best and Fairest and being picked in the Coates Talent League Team of the Year for the second straight season.
Grieves is a tenacious, well-balanced midfielder with a great mix of inside contest work and speed away from the stoppage.
Meanwhile, Field’s rise through the ranks has come after deciding to pursue football over cricket. A talented multi-sport athlete, Field was named in the Cricket Victoria emerging players program for the 2021-22 season before giving the away the sport to concentrate on footy.
Field who captained the Western Jets this year is a naturally gifted defender with good agility that allows her to cleverly intercept.
The pair’s selection on Monday night means the WFNL has had at least one former player picked in the AFLW Draft for three consecutive years after Kristie-Lee Weston-Turner (pick number 1, Western Bulldogs) in 2023 and Laura Elliot (pick number 26, Hawthorn) in 2022.
