HOULI NOMINATED FOR JIM STYNES AWARD

Richmond premiership player and former WRFL junior Bachar Houli has been announced as a finalist for the 2020 Jim Stynes Community Leadership Award.

Houli is one of four players nominated for the prestigious award. Others nominated include Carlton star Tayla Harris, Western Bulldogs premiership player Lauren Spark and Port Adelaide’s Justin Westhoff.

The Jim Stynes Award is presented annually to an AFL or AFLW player who has best demonstrated the values of the late former Melbourne Football Club president and player Jim Stynes, in their commitment to the community, helping others, making a difference and the way they played and represented the game on field.

Houli was nominated for his impact on the lives of young Islamic Australians and the broader community.

He is regarded as a community leader and role model through the work of the Bachar Houli Foundation – an organisation he founded to promote social cohesion and harmony.

Houli is now a prominent public figure thanks to his dedication and commitment to community work with Muslim youth and has been internationally recognised for his work.

“Bachar has spent a good part of his fourteen-year AFL career serving the community. His passion and leadership in this space over a long period is unparalleled,” said Richmond CEO Brendon Gale.

“Our Club is incredibly proud of the community work Bachar does. He is an extraordinary person that is committed to improving and shaping the lives of the next generation of Islamic youth.

Nominations for the award are formed from AFL Clubs and the AFL Players Association before a judging panel selected the final four finalists.

Supported by Telstra, the AFL and the Jim Stynes Foundation, the winner will receive $40,000 to be donated to the charity or community program of their choice.

The award winner will be announced during Sunday’s Brownlow Medal count.
