LAKERS CAUSE FINAL GAME UPSET

By KEL ROWE

The last round of the home and away season brought with it a handful of footy hit-outs for the VU Polytechic Senior Women’s Competition, and they did not disappoint.

Teams sealed their finals spots, and an unexpected upset closed out the weekend.

Division 1 teams Hoppers Crossing and Spotswood met for the final time this season on Friday night, with the Wolves winning by 68-points.

Hannah Mcmahon kicked three goals for Spotswood, and Chloe Weston-Sirett continued to impress.

Saturday morning saw Division 2 sides North Sunshine go head-to-head against Laverton. It was the Road Runners last chance to seal a win this season. It wasn’t to be for the home side despite a hotly contested game, the Magpies coming away with a 30-point victory.

Breannen Bingham and Shannon Blake each kicked two goals for the Magpies, while Jess Mudie was named best on for North Sunshine as she celebrated her 50-game milestone along with Bek Saward and 100-gamer Ricki-Lee Mcconnell.

West Footscray hosted Point Cook, registering a 61-point win over the Bulldogs.

Chantelle Jacobsen-Auld and Rebekka Doolan were strong at the contest for Point Cook, whilst Emily Gillespie and Krystyn Raymundo starred for West Footscray.

The afternoon also saw Rooster Katherine Belcher celebrate her 50th game milestone.

The weekend of footy was completed with a hotly contested match between Division 2 ladder-leaders Point Cook Centrals and Caroline Springs, with the Lakers staging the upset of the season and ending the Sharks unbeaten run.

Both teams were hard at the footy, with the home side able to gain the upper hand and surge the footy into their scoring half to lock in a 24-point win.

Kiera Whiley and Caitlyn Volpe were influential for Caroline Springs, whilst Emmason Mccurley and Mary Daw worked hard under pressure for Point Cook Centrals.
