LAKERS, ROOSTERS THROUGH TO THE BIG DANCE
By Kel Rowe
With just two Grand Final spots on offer over the weekend, the heat was on the remaining VU Polytechnic Senior Women’s teams to claim victory and proceed to the final round.
In beautiful, sunny conditions, Caroline Springs opened the fixture against Werribee Centrals, with the Lakers launching straight out of the blocks with 4 majors in the first term. The Centurions worked their way back into the contest in the second, keeping the Lakers quiet on the scoreboard and narrowing the deficit to just one point.
The half-time break brought a huge response from the Lakers, who belted through 8 scoring opportunities to take the decisive 23-point win. Jordin Williamson starred for Caroline Springs, kicking a major and earning best-on-ground honours, while Jessica Spall fought valiantly for the Centurions.
After a huge year of growth and development, Werribee Centrals finish their season; whilst Caroline Springs earn their chance to defend their Division 1 title — a repeat of the 2022 premiership match.
The second match of the day saw Spotswood go head-to-head with West Footscray, in a one-goal thriller that went the way of the Roosters. An entertaining battle that saw multiple scoring shots at either end of the ground, West Footscray held off the Wolves’ final quarter surge to claim their maiden Grand Final appearance.
Roxy Sefton was influential out of the middle for the Roosters, earning time in best for her efforts, whilst Tamsyn Kirk was huge for Spotwood, kicking 3 majors. West Footscray now turn their attention to the weekend ahead, where they will meet rivals Wyndhamvale in the Division 2 Grand Final.
