LAVERTON LEARNING EACH WEEK

Laverton Senior Women’s coach Abbey Brown says despite not getting wins on the board in the Victoria University Polytechnic Division 2 competition, her team has been able to grow and learn each week.

“This season has been great,” she said.

“After almost two years of COVID to now playing each week, it’s been a huge win in that sense.

“We love to play football, to challenge ourselves and learn from these challenges all whilst having fun and becoming closer.

“I’m very proud of the Laverton ladies who never give up and always play their hardest.

“Together with our amazing volunteers and supporters I think our first win of the season against North Sunshine at home was one to remember, it was a hard-fought team win and one that brought a lot of hype amongst the team.”

Brown, who took over as coach at the beginning of the season, admits it has been a challenge to adjust to playing and coaching, but the support by the team has given her the freedom to fully embrace the role.

“Being a Playing Coach definitely has been hard at times, but I am so lucky to have such a supportive team,” she said.

“My runner Garry has played more of an assistant coach role and with Andrea my team manager and sideline coach we have made a wonderful team. Having these guys by my side has allowed me to have the flexibility to also focus on my own game.”

Laverton face ladder-leaders Point Cook Centrals on Saturday, before finishing their season on August 13 with a match against North Sunshine – a team they defeated earlier this year.

Brown said while the team has been focusing their attention on the week ahead, there has been some excitement surrounding their clash with the Roadrunners. A game she believes will be evenly matched.

“North Sunshine are a strong team and move the ball well through the middle, we will need to make sure we play our best style of footy and take every opportunity that comes our way,” she said.

“No matter what we will start the game as a team and finish as a team and to us that is finishing the season on a high. A win would just be a bonus.”

Point Cook Centrals host Laverton on Saturday at 10.30am at Featherbrook Reserve.
