ROADRUNNERS SCORE THRILLING WIN

Dempster Park played host to an exciting Sunshine derby between North Sunshine and Sunshine Heights, with numerous lead changes providing a thrilling encounter.

From the first quarter, North Sunshine looked to stamp their presence, but were unable to translate this into scoreboard pressure. The Roadrunners kicked a miserly one goal and six behinds, with only Brad Dick converting, as Sunshine Heights were able to have a slim 1-point lead at quarter time.

Sunshine Heights begun the second quarter with quick goals and efficient ball movement, with James Vella’s foot-skills helping the Dragons get on top. North Sunshine were unable to have the same success, turning the ball over and facing a 13-point deficit at the main change

North Sunshine came out renewed in the second-half, with more energy around the ball leading to scoring opportunities. Cody Miles was in every contest, as North Sunshine begun to score through Dick and Brenton Cooper. As it looked like Sunshine Heights were falling away, Vella and Daoud Diab forced the Dragons back into the contest. With momentum swinging again, the Roadrunners quickly closed the quarter with goals from Darren Turner and Alex Alagona, to ensure they only trailed by two-points.

With North Sunshine coach asking his team to “play smarter for longer” the Roadrunners were fired up in the last quarter.

Frank Staffieri took an absolute screamer and converted the set shot for the Dragons, which had North Sunshine on the ropes. Unfazed, the Roadrunners stormed home, with Darren Turner kicked his second and third goals, helping North Sunshine secure a narrow 7-point win over their rivals.

Elsewhere, Braybrook battled against the Wyndham Suns, but the Suns were too good, with Simon Nahyna and Ashley Gallina helping Wyndham kick away to a 36-point win. Wyndham will look to stay unbeaten as they take on Glen Orden next week.

Tarneit dominated with a 133-point win over Glen Orden, as Troy Smith and Chris Benson combined for 11-goals. Tarneit will look to continue their form next week against North Sunshine.

Lastly, Laverton were soundly beaten by Point Cook, with Michael Szulc and the Sharks getting a 95-point win. The Magpies will hope to bounce back against Sunshine Heights, while the Sharks take on Braybrook.
