ROOSTERS CLINCH FIRST WIN IN 1311 DAYS

BY Art Vandelay

Looking for their first win since August 10, 2019, the West Footscray Roosters travelled to play a new-look Laverton Magpies in Round 1 of the Rookie Me Division 3 season.

In wet and windy conditions, the Roosters would kick 4 goals to the Magpies’ 2 in the first quarter to take the lead going into quarter time.

The Magpies would claw back going into halftime by just 2 points. They would continue to come at the Roosters in the second half, but ultimately a 32 to 13-point second half would allow West Footscray to sing their song for the first time in 1311 days.

Joshua Barker was named one of the Roosters’ best with his 3 goals, alongside Dylan Toulmin and Nicholas Howard. Thomas Stelluto also kicked 3 goals for the Roosters.

The trio of recruits, Nathan Gannon, William Jenkins & Ubil Chol, were named amongst the best for the Magpies.

West Footscray will look to continue their newfound winning ways, taking on Sunshine Heights at home.

Sunshine Heights would host Albanvale in their first games for 2023 as both teams look to go further into September after making finals in 2022.

A close game in the first half, a 9 goal to 5 second half would secure the victory for the Cobras over the Dragons.

Brock McLarty was named best for the Cobras whilst teammate Matthew Taylor would kick 4.

For the Dragons, James Vella and Elliot Rosado were named amongst the best.

Albanvale now goes into their Round 2 bye with 1 win under their belt, playing Tarneit in Round 3.

North Sunshine would travel to Wootten Road Reserve to play Tarneit. The Titans would kick 7 goals in each of the first three quarters to set up a 143-point win over the Roadrunners. Alex Roze led the goalkickers with 6 majors, whilst Jason Seduikis in his return as a Titan would kick 5. Brendan Binek would be named the best for the Titans. For the Roadrunners, Brodie Raines was named their best.

Tarneit’s next challenge will be their crosstown rivals in 2022 grand finalists Suns in their first game for 2023.

The Roadrunners will look to get on the winner’s board when they host Laverton Magpies in Round 2.
