ROOSTERS GET REVENGE

By KEL ROWE

Friday night started with a bang in Round 7 of the VU Polytechnic Senior Women’s competition; with Werribee Centrals continuing their winning streak and securing a 128-point home-turf victory over Point Cook Centrals.

Centurion Larissa Renaut was back to her 2022 Leading Goal Kicker form, bagging 8 majors, whilst Jaime Nankiville and Lyndal Ridder performed under pressure for the Sharks.

Division 1 sides Spotswood and Parkside Spurs kicked things off on Saturday morning, going head-to-head for the second time this season. The Wolves locked in a 43-point win that saw Kerrie Clark kick 2 majors, and Mia Graf influential across the ground. Aleisha Casely was the sole goal kicker for Spurs.

Spotswood’s Division 2 side ensured the double for the club at Dempster Park, running over Nth Sunshine in a 242-point win. The visitors had 16 individual goalkickers on the day, with Ricki-Lee McConnell and Kelly Wade working hard for Roadrunners.

At TIV Oval, Laverton held off a late fightback from opposition Point Cook, claiming victory by a goal at the final siren. Jamie Te Pania and Abbey Brown both hit the score board for the Pies, with the latter earning time in best.

To complete the round, West Footscray hosted Caroline Springs in their first meeting since the Lakers knocked the home side out of contention in the 2022 Preliminary Final. The Roosters started strong, winning the clearance, and hitting the scoreboard in the opening minutes.

Caroline Springs chased down the lead and were 2-points in front at the final turn of the game, but West Footscray gained ascendancy, surging into their scoring half on multiple occasions to secure a 10-point victory by the final siren.

Hazel McCafferty was electric for the Roosters through the middle of the ground and Emma Farrugia was a force down back, providing a safe pair of hands in front of goals. Ruck Michelle Murphy was strong for the Lakers, whilst Jaz Kinkaid was dangerous around the ground, kicking a major for her side.

Both competitions will take a well-earned break over the King’s Birthday long weekend, with the action set to resume for both divisions in Round 8 on Friday 16 June.
