SENIOR NETBALL: ROUND 10 REVIEW
Each week we’ll be reviewing one match from all seven senior netball divisions, selecting one of the closer games or a key match in the context of the season. Read on to find out what took place across the courts in Round 10.
DIVISION 1 – Wyndhamvale Green v Laverton Magpies
Laverton, keen to rebound after a substantial loss a week earlier, entered their match with Wyndhamvale with a revamped starting lineup. Even with the changes Laverton’s core strength and competitiveness were still present from the opening whistle with the defensive prowess of GK Brittany Christy and GD Colleen Lavea proving to be a formidable barrier in Wyndhamvale’s shooting circle. The pair’s ability to force turnovers and control the tempo of play tested Wyndhamvale’s offensive strategies throughout the game. At the other end of the court, Wyndhamvale’s own defensive duo of Ellie Martin (GK) and Matilda Elliot (GD) stood firm against Laverton’s attacking efforts, setting the stage for a gripping contest under the net. As the second half progressed it was Wyndhamvale who managed to gain the ascendency, holding a crucial four-goal advantage over Laverton. Despite Laverton’s relentless pursuit and strategic adjustments, Wyndhamvale maintained their composure and defensive solidity until the final whistle to claim a 35-30 victory.
DIVISION 2 – PCCSC Great White Sharks v PCCSC Tiger Sharks
In was a closely contested match between Point Cook Centrals’ Great White Sharks and Tiger Sharks when the two club mates meet in Division 2 action. Ellie Pawlowski stood out for the Tiger Sharks in the wing defense position showcasing her skill, while Tannah Pawlowski played a key role at centre, demonstrating her effectiveness and contribution to the team’s cohesive play. Meanwhile, for the Great White Sharks Emily Parsons made a notable impact playing goal attack with her influence more substantial as the game progressed. In the end the collective team effort and the standout performances of Ellie Pawlowski and Tannah Pawlowski helped the Tiger Sharks notch their second win of divisional play with a 36-32 result.
DIVISION 3 – Glen Orden 3 v Braybrook Priest
After starting divisional play with four straight losses Braybrook Priest looked to have turned a corner a week ago with an upset win over Sunshine Williams. Taking on Glen Orden in Round 10, Alyssa Piazzese and Amelia Piazzese showed remarkable chemistry, suggesting they’ve been playing together for years. Their connection from the center pass into Braybrook’s goal third was strong and adaptable with GS Helena Samardzija making the most of her opportunities to score 22 goals. Despite going under the radar this season Kyhia Young displayed the skills she has picked up from her move to Glen Orden. Playing wing defense, Young was crucial in the turnover game for her side affecting a number of critical moments. With Young’s defensive efforts and Emily Evans’ speed Glen Orden fought hard for four quarters. However, it was Braybrook posting another impressive win with a final score of 39-36.
DIVISION 4 – North Footscray Red v Laverton White
Having collected their first win of divisional play in Round 9, Laverton White were keen to build on that momentum against North Footscray Red who also entered with mixed results in their own campaign. North Footscray GD Sarah Bates again exhibited her prowess in the defensive circle. Known for her consistency and solid performance week after week, Bates proved instrumental in thwarting opposition shooters and securing turnovers for her team. Meanwhile, Sian Ellis-Peters took centre stage for Laverton, with her strong shooting, recording 15 goals from 21 attempts. Ellis-Peters’ relentless efforts and goal scoring was crucial in maintaining Laverton’s offensive momentum throughout the contest. In the midcourt, Caitlin Dodd (WA) played a pivotal role for North Footscray, demonstrating exceptional agility and vision distributing the ball from the centre to the circle edge with precision. In an evenly matched game these two couldn’t be separated at the final whistle with the result a 21-21 draw
DIVISION 5 – Albanvale Blue v Laverton Black
Albanvale Blue and Laverton Black went into Round 10 looking for a third win having both accumulated 2-3 win-loss records ahead of their clash. For Albanvale, Jayden Saltmarsh once again took center stage, having shined in recent outings. Known for being a unique shooter within a dynamic midcourt, Saltmarsh’s performance displayed both skill and versatility. Albanvale coach Kelly Greenwood has dedicated herself to developing her side’s shooters and the team has clearly benefited from her expertise and leadership from the bench. In the defensive side of the game Laverton’s Morgan Pollock had a challenging task on her hands but demonstrated resilience and skill within a well-structured defense taught by Angie Karika. All this contributed to a competitive encounter, with both teams fiercely pursuing victory. As the match concluded Albanvale were able to hang on to register a narrow 30-28 win.
DIVISION 6 – Glen Orden 6 v Sunshine Toomey
With both teams at the pointy end of the standings the Division 6 match-up between Glen Orden and Sunshine Toomey was always going to be a good one. The game was marked by intense competition and notable performances from key players on both sides. For Glen Orden, Jess Peter (C) and Rhianna Chick (WA) provided crucial support to their shooting circle. The pair’s coordination and playmaking helped Glen Orden maintain control and create scoring opportunities. Sunshine had Jade Williams stand out in goal attack with her accuracy and strength in the shooting circle allowing her side to keep pace throughout. The game was characterised by strategic manoeuvres, strong defensive efforts and determined play from both teams. Ultimately, Glen Orden’s well-organised play and effective utilisation of their midcourt players saw them collect a fifth win with the end score reading 24-21.
DIVISION 7 – West Footscray Red v Braybrook John
Round 10 in Division 7 saw more tightly contested games with the match between West Footscray Red and Braybrook John the pick of them. It was a game filled with intensity and determination from both sides, with West Foostcray producing another disciplined performance which is a testament to coach Darren Burnham. The sideline support for West Footscray was also passionate and vocal, adding to the atmosphere of the encounter. On the other hand, Braybrook showcased their resilience and strength particularly on the defensive side as they made it hard for West Footscray’s attackers. Both teams’ shooters showed good accuracy, taking their opportunities and keeping the scoreline close. The battle was fierce and evenly matched, with neither side willing to concede ground easily. In the end Braybrook’s defensive solidity was a determining factor in the final result as they overcame West Footscray by a single goal, triumphing 23-22.
