SPOTSWOOD SNATCH VICTORY
By LEO MULLALY
Spotswood has proved too classy for a winless Yarraville Seddon side, defeating the Eagles by nine-points at Yarraville Oval in the Under 18 Division 1 Competition.
The Woodsmen controlled the opening quarter, but failed to capitalise on their momentum, registering eight behinds.
The opposite played out in the second quarter, as the Eagles started to create more run and look more dangerous going inside forward 50.
Yarraville took a seven-point lead into the main break, with Kieran Ryall and Oscar Siddell impressing.
However, the third quarter belonged to Connor Schibeci, as the Spotswood full forward slotted five goals, including four in a row late in the quarter.
Another highlight for the Woodsmen in that term was a terrific 40 metre snap from the boundary off the boot of Andrew Theodorou.
Spotswood held a 15-point lead heading into the last, but Yarraville coach Christopher Smith remained optimistic when giving his three-quarter time address.
Smith implored his team to gain territory, utilise the corridor and be ready for this more direct style of footy.
A Yarraville comeback gained momentum when Zakariya El-Houli replicated Theodorou’s third quarter snap from the boundary under intense pressure.
However, a goal out the back to Theodorou late in the piece sealed the game for Spotswood.
Harrison Newitt and Nicholas Sotiropoulos were strong performers for the Woodsmen, while Samuel Gunesekara impressed in a losing side.
The Eagles will play Altona next week, while Spotswood face a Hoppers Crossing side that will be looking to quickly rebound from a 76-point thrashing against Point Cook.
Caroline Springs managed to knock off Werribee Districts by 11-points, handing them their first loss of the season.
Point Cook will be looking to end the Lakers’ six game winning streak in what is set to be an enthralling contest.
