SPURS SECURE MAIDEN WRFL WIN

By Kel Rowe

Round 2 of the VU Polytechnic Senior Women’s Competition brought big scores, surprise victors and a win for Division 1’s new kids on the block.

In Division 1, the Werribee Central Centurions suffered defeat under lights on Friday night, going down to Spotswood by 15 points. Stephanie Fomekong was a standout for the Wolves, kicking a major and earning time in best.

Saturday morning saw the Parkside Spurs secure their maiden win in the league, beating out Yarraville Seddon in a 39-point victory away from home. After a relatively even first half, the Spurs burned away, kicking 6 unanswered majors. Rachel Culvenor provided plenty of run and carry for the Eagles, but it was no match for the efforts of the Spurs, led by Nadine Lampard, who kicked 2 and was named in best for her side.

To round out the Division 1 fixture for the weekend, Caroline Springs hosted Point Cook Centrals, registering a 6-goal win over the new Division 1 side. Jen Plumb was the lone goal scorer for the Sharks, whilst Caitlin Pretty and My Yen Au combined to bag the majors for the Lakers.

In Division 2, Laverton stunned North Sunshine, executing a dominant 114-point victory over their hosts. The Pies whole-team performance saw may players make an impact, but it was Summer Farley who starred in front of goals, kicking 4 majors in the win.

In similar scenes, the Spotswood Division 2 side ran over Braybrook, keeping their opposition scoreless in a 150-point drubbing. Hannah Mcmahon and Tamsyn Kirk were the main contributors, kicking 6 and 5 goals respectively. Despite being unable to register a score, Kaitlin and Paige Borjarowski worked hard for the Braybrook side.

Shaping up to be the Division 2 smokey of Season 2023, Wyndhamvale beat out Caroline Springs, in a low-scoring affair with plenty of action in front of goals. The Falcons had a whopping 22 scoring opportunities across the game, but only managed to convert 3 majors thanks to Rachael Burton and Melissa Higgins, whilst the Laker’s sent 2 through the big sticks via the boot of Anthea Stathakis.

The final game of Round two featured a home-ground tussle for West Footscray, who were made to work for a 21-point win over their opposition Point Cook. Krystyn Raymundo got the Roosters off to a cracking start, surging through the middle and snagging a major. Point Cook ruck Sarah Poni was impressive at the stoppages, using her strength to turn the Sherrin to the advantage of her side.
