STUDY OPTIONS ON THE PATH TO BECOMING A CARPENTER

Cert III in Carpentry v Cert III in Carpentry Apprenticeship

Carpentry is a popular choice for those wanting to become a part of the construction industry. And choosing the right educational path can set the foundation for a rewarding career. Trade Institute of Victoria (TIV) offers two distinct paths for those wanting to work in the carpentry trade and both deliver the same Certificate III qualification but in slightly different formats.

Certificate III in Carpentry
The Certificate III in Carpentry is suited to those looking for a broad understanding of carpentry within a shorter time frame. It blends theoretical knowledge with practical skills and has been a resounding success with students of all ages. It’s more intensive than the apprenticeship path but is well suited to students who wish to engage in comprehensive learning before stepping into the workforce, or for those who may not have found an apprenticeship employer but don’t want to delay starting.

Duration: It runs for 16 months (taking into account holidays) with classes held over 3 consecutive days per week. Classes run from 7am to 3pm.

Location: The course is run on site from our Tottenham and Dandenong campuses.

Fees: Fees start at $4,457 for Concession Card holders and go up to $6,305 for those eligible for government funding, and $15,553 for those not eligible for government funding.

Inclusions: Students are provided with hi viz vest, safety boots, hat, two tops and two shirts, a tool bag (with appropriate tools) and text books.

What will be taught:

• Construct truss, pitched and complex roof systems

• Construct floor, wall and ceiling frames

• Install and replace windows and doors

• Apply OHS Policies & Procedures

• Construct stairs, formwork and re-enforcement

• Read and interpret plans and specifications

• Work sustainably & effectively within a team environment

• Use various measuring devices to set out the building on site

• Erect scaffolding and work from heights

• Scaffolding

Assessment: Students will sit an exam at the end of the course to assess quality and speed of construction, interpreting plans, measuring/cutting, and communication.

Certificate III in Carpentry Apprenticeship
The Certificate III in Carpentry Apprenticeship is suited to those wanting to work and earn money while gaining practical experience on the job, and combining it with study. It takes longer to gain the Certificate III qualification through this route. This pathway of study involves finding an employer and being registered with the apprenticeship board. The majority of training will occur in the workplace, overseen by an employer.

Duration: It runs for 3-4 years (depending on level of competency) with classes held 2 days per month over 7 months of the year.

Location: The course is run from various locations around Melbourne depending on where the employer is.

Fees: Fees start at $1,258 for Concession Card holders and go up to $5,290 for those eligible for government funding, and $11,700 for those not eligible for government funding.

Inclusions: Students are provided with electronic copies of various building codes and standards, manuals, learner guides, plans and specifications.

Assessment: On the job site work will be assessed by TIV’s qualified Assessors.
