TIGERS PROVE TOO STRONG FOR BULLDOGS

The Western Region Football League TIV Under 19 competition kicked off over the weekend, with Round 1 delivering three pulsating encounters to commence season 2018.

Wild and wet conditions greeted teams as they looked to start their season with a win.

At Hogans Road Reserve, Hoppers Crossing was able to narrowly clinch an 18-point win over Altona, 10.8. (68) to 8.2. (50).

Both sides were neck and neck throughout the day, in what was a tight, hotly contested game of football.

After trailing by a goal at three quarter time, a four goal to none final quarter saw the Warriors run over the top of the Vikings.

Jack Xuereb kicked three for the hosts, while Anthony Tiricola and Ryley Mcgaw were instrumental in the victory. For Altona, Daniel Pantalleresco kicked three majors, while Jordan Conti fought gallantly all day.

Meanwhile, Werribee Districts proved too strong for Point Cook, running out 24-point winners 6.14.(50) to 4.2. (26).

With 20 scoring shots to six, it was only inaccurate kicking that prevented the Districts from a higher winning margin.

Mathiang Chak kicked three, while Luke Fava also starred for the visitors.

For Point Cook, Connor De Brincat stood out in the clash for the home side, while forward Jordan Messina was able to contribute two majors.

In the third game of the round, Caroline Springs fought back from a 26-point quarter time deficit against Spotswood to run out 27-point winners, 11.9. (75) to 7.6. (48).

The Lakers were able to work their way back into the game in the second term, as they piled on five goals to one to enter the main break two points in front.

Through the work of Zain Neicho and Anthony Loiacono, the Lakers never looked back in the second half.

Newport Power had the bye, and will have to wait another week in order to begin their 2018 campaign.
