TIV: WHY YOU NEED A WHITE CARD AND HOW TO OBTAIN ONE

The White Card, formally known as the General Construction Induction Card, is mandatory for anyone working on a construction site in Australia. Whether you’re a student or apprentice just starting out, an experienced tradesperson, or an onsite supervisor, you require a White Card. In this blog, we’ll explore the reasons it’s so important.

Ensuring workplace safety

The most obvious reason for obtaining a White Card is safety. Construction sites are filled with a variety of risks, and White Card training equips you with the knowledge to identify and mitigate these risks. It promotes a culture of safety, ensuring everyone on site understands the protocols and procedures necessary to prevent accidents and injuries.

Fulfilling legal requirements

As mentioned earlier, the White Card is mandatory. It’s a legal requirement under Australian Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations. Working on a construction site without a White Card can result in heavy fines for both you and the employer. By undergoing training and obtaining your White Card, you’re not only protecting your own health and safety but also adhering to the legal framework that governs the industry.

Confidence

While the direct benefits of safety and legal compliance are obvious, the White Card also brings indirect advantages. After you undergo training for your White Card you’ll experience greater confidence in your role, and what’s required to maintain or ensure you’re working in a safe environment. This confidence can lead to greater productivity and better job satisfaction. Construction sites that prioritise White Card training also tend to foster a more collaborative and supportive environment.

So, how do you get a White Card?

Gaining your White Card is very simple and can actually be done in a single day. The Trade Institute of Victoria runs White Card Construction Induction Training at Dandenong and Williamstown North campuses on Saturdays from 8:45am to 3:15pm. You need to have basic English skills and be at least 15 years of age to participate. You’ll need to provide the required identity documents and have a laptop and charger with you as well.

TIV will provide all course materials, along with a fluorescent jacket. The course is run by approachable and knowledgeable trainers and the cost is $150. Upon completion of the training, you’ll be emailed a Statement of Attainment and TIV will apply to WorkSafe Victoria on your behalf for your White Card. This will be mailed to you once ready, usually within 3-4 weeks.
