Whilst consistently windy conditions were a feature in Round 8 of the VU Polytechnic Senior Women’s Competition, the weather wasn’t a deterrent to the footballers of Division 1 and 2, with plenty of excitement and action in the mix over the weekend.

On Friday night, the Division 2 fixture kicked off with colour and celebration, as North Sunshine hosted West Footscray in their annual Pride hit out, the match also marking Rooster Kel Rowe’s 50th game milestone.

Dani Holdsworth provided strong ruckwork around the ground for the Roadrunners, whilst Emily Gillespie kicked a bag of 6 for the Roosters, helping the visitors to an emphatic 135-point win.

Over at Galvin Park, the Werribee Centrals locked in a 74-point win over Yarraville Seddon, cementing their spot as a top contender in Division 1. Giselle Lambley starred for the Centurions, kicking 4 majors, and was named in best, with Madeleine Patterson the sole goal kicker for the Eagles, ably supported by captain Melanie Thompson-Allan.

Saturday morning saw a double-header out at Taylor’s Run oval, with Caroline Springs and Spotswood sides going head-to-head in the Division 1 and 2 competitions.

The Division 1 hit out saw a tight contest between the Lakers and the Wolves, the lead changing hands at every break, but it was Spotswood’s game at the final siren — kicking a late goal with the wind to lock in an 8-point victory.

Mia Gordon was influential for Caroline Springs, hitting the scoreboard and earning best on for her side, whilst Hannah McMahon kicked two majors for Spotswood.

In the Division 2 match, the Spotswood side proved too good for their opposition, with the side establishing an early 4-goal lead. Unfortunately, due to injury, the game was concluded early in the final quarter.

In similar circumstances, Wyndhamvale and Point Cook were forced to finish their hit out in the third quarter, but not before the home side registered 6 unanswered goals. Kellee Mcintosh was a major contributor for the Falcons, kicking 4 and earning time in best, whilst Chantelle Jacobsen-Auld was the lone scorer for the Dogs.

The Parkside Spurs beat Point Cook Centrals by 16-points in icy temperatures, with the Division 1 sides meeting for the second time this season. Chloe Harman and Rita Ceravolo were strong for the Spurs — with the latter kicking 2 majors; whilst Shark Lyndal Ridder earned time in best for her efforts around the ground.

To complete the fixture for the weekend, Laverton locked in their 4th win on the trot, overcoming Braybrook in a 78-point victory. Summer Farley (4) and Rosa Deverell (2) bagged multiples for the Magpies and were rewarded with time in best. Despite being kept scoreless, Brookers’ Kaitlin Bojarowski and Sarah Jamieson worked hard under the pump for their side.
