TOP THREE SHOW CLASS

Round 7 of the WRFL season saw a trio of dominant performances, however it was the win by North Footscray that had the biggest impact on the competition. The Devils clinched their fifth victory in 2018 and made sure to keep themselves in serious contention for the premiership.

With the Bulldogs and the Eagles having made super starts to the season, many had forgotten about the third-placed North Footscray, and this was remedied with their 48-point win over Albanvale. The Devils led at every change and never looked in trouble, as they kept within striking distance of the top two sides.

The team was led by three goals each to Brayden Montebruno, Jason Butty and Brenden Lucas, while Tyron Bennett was also superb.

For Albanvale, it was once again back to the drawing board as the team sits lonely at the bottom of the table, with just a solitary victory to their name. They will hope to turn things around in Round 8 when they take on Parkside, while the Devils face a serious challenge as they battle the Eagles.

The Eagles themselves had a dour, but comfortable win, besting Manor Lakes by 53-points on Saturday afternoon at Howqua Reserve. Yarraville-Seddon kept their opponents to just three goals for the match, highlighted their incredible defensive capabilities, which has seen them concede the least points in the competition so far in 2018.

The Storm remains in fourth spot on the ladder, but they have the Power and Parkside snapping at their heels. They will be desperate for a win to consolidate their position in the next round, as they take on Point Cook.

This won’t be an easy task however, as the Bulldogs absolutely destroyed West Footscray on the weekend, running away with a 71-point victory. The Bulldogs utilised a number of avenues to goal, with three goals haul from Kirk Heberle, Andrew Auciello, Alex Grigg and Joel Dwyer. The Roosters had no answers throughout the match, and were kept from complete humiliation thanks to a brave performance from gun forward Darcy McCallum, who booted five majors to keep second spot in the goal kicking table.

Elsewhere, the Newport Power had a strong win, defeating Parkside by 26-points, notching their third victory for the year and maintaining enough momentum to remain a finals chance.
