VIKINGS DUKE IT OUT WITH LAKERS

Round 11 of the Western Region Football League TIV Under 19 competition saw Altona and Caroline Springs duke it out in an enticing contest, while Werribee Districts outplayed Point Cook in a comprehensive display.

In the clash at Grant Reserve, both sides went in confident that they could topple the other, and obtain a mental edge in the lead up to the finals and business end of the season.

Due to wintry conditions, the clash was a low-scoring affair, with goals hard to come by. Altona raced to a 13 point lead at the quarter time break, which was then drawn back to nine points at the main break.

The tight tussle continued through the third stanza, as both sides attempted to outmuscle the other and win more contested footy. The Lakers were able to outmuscle the Vikings and lead by 2 points at the three quarter time break.

However, Altona showed great character and fortitude to outlast the Lakers and end up the victors by a solitary goal, 5.6. (36) to 4.6. (30).

Jack Callaway showed why he’s one of the best players in the competition, with two goals in an outstanding display that helped his Altona side over the line. He was aptly supported by Jack Papachatzakis, and Michael Rubino.

In the other encounter of the round, Werribee Districts dismantled Point Cook in emphatic fashion, 14.9. (93) to 1.3. (9).

Despite the gallant effort of Point Cook, Werribee controlled the match and never took their foot off the throttle. The Bulldogs defence were unable to contain the dominant Werribee forward line, as Lachlan Rainbow kicked 5 majors, and Connor McIntosh and Darcy Phillips added 3 each respectively.

Hoppers Crossing enjoyed a week off with the bye, and will look to reset their campaign in Round 12 against Caroline Springs.
