VIKINGS FORGE AHEAD

Round 7 of the Western Region Football League TIV Under 19 competition saw Altona grind out an important victory against Werribee Districts, while Caroline Springs dished out a heavy win against Point Cook.

Meanwhile, for the second week in a row, Spotswood was forced to forfeit their encounter with Newport Power due to an insufficient amount of players.

In the biggest game of the round, Altona and Werribee entered the clash both brimming with confidence, and looking to get the upper hand over one another.

The encounter itself was very even for the best part of three quarters. Despite Altona racing to a 16-point lead at quarter time, Werribee were able to reign in their counterparts to lead by a point at the main break.

This tight and gritty tussle continued into the premiership quarter, as two goals from both sides resulted in an even score-line at the final break, 5.8. (38) to 4.14. (38).

However, Altona produced an outstanding display in the final quarter to kick 7 goals to 1, racing out to a 41-point victory.

Once again, star forward and competition leading goal-scorer Daniel Pantalleresco was menacing up forward with four majors, while Jawad Jawad chipped in with three.

Kosta Arapidis was influential throughout the contest for the Vikings, and was well supported by Jack Papachatzakis and William McConville.

For Werribee, Darcy Phillips kicked two whilst Liam Robinson and Alexander Alabakis toiled hard throughout the contest.

In the other game that took place in Round 7, Caroline Springs comprehensively defeated Point Cook by 109-points, 23.15.(153) to 6.8. (44).

Despite a relatively evening opening quarter, which resulted in the Lakers only leading by 8 points at quarter time, the home side were able to overwhelm the Bulldogs from that point onwards.

There was a relatively of attacking power for the Lakers, as 12 separate goal-kickers contributed to the win. However, Brian Gill was the pick of the forwards with four majors.

Zain Neicho was also instrumental in the victory, as was Justin Bell in what was largely a complete team performance.

For Point Cook, Ethan Crawley worked hard for his three majors.

Hoppers Crossing had the bye, and will look to resume their campaign when they take on Point Cook in two weeks’ time.
