VIKINGS, POWER, WARRIORS ON WINNERS LIST
By JAMES ORUBA
Round 2 of the WRFL TIV Under 19 season saw plenty of action, as all six sides seek to register early wins.
After having the bye last round, Newport Power was finally able to kick things into gear for season 2018 and they were able to start on the right note, grinding out a 42-point win against Point Cook.
Point Cook were still in the contest at three-quarter time, trailing the Power by 21-points. Ultimately though, a five goal to one last quarter allowed the Power to close out the game in emphatic fashion.
Hamze Atik starred for the Power, with a best on ground display and two majors. Chris Sotiropoulos also kicked three, while Henco Cronje performed admirably for the losing side.
A six-goal effort from Daniel Pantalleresco helped spearhead Altona’s 92-point trouncing of Spotswood. And it could have been much more. Inaccurate kicking plagued the Vikings in the 14.23.107 to 2.3.15 win, as they registered 37 scoring shots to five.
Jack Callaway and Brody Searle set the tone in the midfield, in a massive victory for the reigning premiers.
In perhaps what was the game of the round, Hoppers Crossing and Werribee Districts fought right down to the wire. However, Hoppers Crossing prevailed in the end, 9.14. (68) to 10.2. (62). In the epic encounter, both sides traded blows all day, with the margin remaining close throughout the game.
Hamish Holmes and Anthony Tiricola were highly influential for the Warriors, while Lachlan Rainbow starred up forward for Werribee with four goals.
Hoppers Crossing currently sit on top of the ladder, closely followed by Newport and Altona. Point Cook and Spotswood currently remain winless after the opening two rounds.
Caroline Springs had the bye, as they wait to face the undefeated Warriors in round three.
