VU POLYTECHNIC SENIOR WOMEN’S PREVIEW: WERRIBEE CENTRALS
By KEL ROWE
After 6 years at the helm building his close-knit group from the ground up, Werribee Centrals Senior Women’s Coach Glenn Ballard has a lot to be excited about. This year is set to be their biggest yet — a taste of finals in 2022 left the Centurions hungry, determined to further their success.
“The way we have recruited during preseason and the numbers we are getting, the culture around the team that we have spent the last 5 years building, it’s made us a destination club in the West.” the senior coach said.
“The girls have bought into the belief in our structure and what we are trying to do with this team and it’s having a flow-on effect on to the field.”
So far in Season 2023, the Centurions have gone 6 and 1, suffering a single loss to Spotswood in Round 2, only to claim retribution over their rivals in Round 6. The win saw the Centurions achieve a major team goal — having never beaten the Wolves prior — and sets the stage for an epic final series between the top sides.
“Being more competitive in Division 1 is something that we’re striving for, we believe we will bring so much to this competition in 2023. We know that Caroline Springs and Spotswood have been on top since the competition started, so we are excited to see how we match up against them,” he said.
Ballard is pleased with his side’s performance to-date and their development across the board. “We understand what every player contributes to this team and the value they bring, both on and off the field,” he reflected.
The club as a whole is firmly behind the team, backing in Ballard’s message for the season. “It’s been all about belief in yourselves and in each other. I am hoping that the girls take this into the 2023 season and hold on to that throughout the year,” he said.
“The coaching staff, club and supporters believe in this team, and we appreciate them so much. It’s now time for the girls to believe in themselves just as much.”
