The newly minted St Vincent’s Private Hospital Werribee Senior Women’s competition kicked off with a bang on Friday night, with the stage set for some hotly contested football between Parkside Spurs and a new team of familiar faces — the Wyndham Suns.
Merv Hughes Oval played host to the high-energy opener, with the game marking Spurs’ captain Aleisha Casley’s 150th milestone.
Despite a huge effort from her side, Casley’s Spurs were pipped by the revitalised Suns contingent, going down by just seven-points at the final siren.
Maddi Johnson worked hard driving the Suns’ engine room, whilst Akima Manoah was also named alongside her teammate in Suns’ best.
Last year’s Division 2 premiers, West Footscray opened their account in big-scoring fashion on Saturday morning, registering a dominant 116-point win over North Sunshine.
The Roadrunners fought hard, with Dannielle Menzies working tirelessly, but the Roosters were too classy as Lacey Covington-Gorst and Emily Gillespie kicking five and four goals respectively.
Caroline Springs and Werribee Centrals met in a rematch of their 2023 preliminary final hit-out, with the Centurions narrowly ousting the Lakers in a two-point thriller.
Jacinda Kondis starred for Caroline Springs up forward, booting four majors, however Jessica Spall turned the game for the Centrals in the second half helping her side to overcome a 16-point deficit at the main break.
Lauren Basto was also influential being named the Centurions’ best.
To round out the weekend, Laverton hosted Wyndhamvale, with the Falcons kicking away to secure a 75-point win.
Hayley Moore was named in best with teammate Rachael Burton kicked four for the visiting side.
Despite the loss, Molly Moloney and Magan Ristic-Keena were solid under pressure for the Magpies.
