WERRIBEE DISTRICTS TAKE THE WIN

By CONNOR PAIN

Werribee Districts confirmed their position as premiership favourites thanks to a hard fought eight-point win over Point Cook.

The Tigers led at each break and, despite finishing with fewer scoring shots than the Bulldogs, maintained their undefeated start to the season.

Inaccurate kicking plagued the home side all afternoon but a zero goal six behinds opening term proved fatal as Point Cook were never able to get on top of the scoreboard.

The visitors extended their first quarter lead going into the half but were still well within striking distance. Point Cook got some control back and won the ‘premiership’ quarter, but further poor goalkicking saw them still behind as they entered the last.

Both sides had chances in the last and scores were tied late, but it was the 2022 grand finalists reigned supreme and edged out the tight 9.11(65) to 7.15(57) triumph.

The usual suspects were key for Werribee as Andrew Panayi, Christopher Molivas and Trent Lee each booted two majors.

The Bulldogs have the week off thanks to playing their Round Six matchup back on April 7th (a win against Hoppers Crossing) while Werribee Districts host Altona in the game of the round.

Point Cook Centrals finally got a drought-breaking win in Division One, downing Hoppers Crossing 12.12(84) to 9.9(63).

Both sides flip flopped with the lead and could rarely be separated, setting up a huge fourth quarter that ended in a landslide Sharks win.

Four goals to one turned a four-point lead into a 21-point victory at the final siren, sparking what would have been great celebrations at Featherbrook Reserve.

The Sharks can make it two from two in Round Six when they battle Yarraville Seddon Eagles.

Spotswood were far too good against Yarraville Seddon, earning their second win on the bounce thanks to a 27-point win.

The Woodsmen led at every break despite playing on the road, the highlight of the afternoon being Brandon Walshe’s six majors, a high across Division One.

The 14.10(94) to 9.13(67) win pushes Spotswood up to fifth on the ladder ahead of a tough clash with Caroline Springs this week.

Altona used a balanced scoring attack on the back of a dominant first quarter to cruise to a 12.12(84) to 8.6(54) win against Caroline Springs.

The Vikings had 10 individual goal kickers in the 30-point success.
