WRFL LAUNCH UNDER 10 GIRLS COMPETITION
This season the Western Region Football League will launch an Under 10 Girls competition, giving aspiring footballers in Melbourne’s west a clear pathway from Juniors through to Seniors.
The WRFL’s junior girls competition has grown significantly in the past three years, with 35 girls teams in action in 2018, up by eight teams the previous year.
In 2019 the number of Junior Girls players will surpass 1000 participants, with more than 40 teams expected to be involved in Under 10, Under 12, Under 15 and Under 18 competitions.
“This is exceptional growth for junior girls football in the west,” WRFL Junior Football Manager Steph Zerowsky said.
“We hope to continue to provide junior girls with the development and enjoyment through well-structured competitions to hopefully seeing them playing within our senior women’s competition in years to come.”
Up to seven clubs have flagged an interest in fielding Under 10 Girls teams this season; Truganina Thunder, Point Cook, Flemington Juniors/Ascot Vale, Altona Juniors, Newport Power, North Footscray and Yarraville Seddon Eagles.
“Launching the Under 10 Girls competition was important to the development of the participating pathway for females. It is critical to the long-term growth and development of the game,” Zerowsky said.
“The Under 10 Girls competition will provide participants with a safe and fun environment to learn new skills where they may not have felt comfortable playing mixed football with the boys.”
The Victoria University Polytechnic Senior Women’s competition is also expected to grow in 2019.
Last year was the inaugural season of the stand-alone competition, featuring nine teams and 341 players.
In 2019, participation numbers are again expected to increase.
“We are so proud to see the female pathway become more defined in the WRFL,” Zerowsky said.
“Junior Girls are now able to move directly from all girls Auskick centres to join the WRFL’s Under 10 Girls competition and then move through to Youth Girls competitions and finally Senior football.”
The WRFL junior season will kick off on April 7.
