WRFL NETBALL CONTINUES TO EXCITE

The inaugural Victoria University WRFL Netball competition was a great success this season and in 2019 the competition is expected to grow significantly.

Eleven clubs, 120 netballers and countless volunteers were involved in the historic season, with Point Cook claiming the title, in what was a momentous Grand Final for the league.

Next year, new clubs are set to feature in the exciting competition. Manor Lakes and Point Cook Centrals are hoping to field teams.

Clubs from this year are also set to expand, with more netballers from across the region getting involved with WRFL Netball.

Braybrook netballer Taylah Chamra said she enjoyed being involved with the inaugural season.

“I thought it was a huge success and can’t wait to see how the competition will grow and strengthen over the coming years,” she said.

Spotswood netballer Courtney Rowe agreed, saying it was great to play in a competition with girls who are competitive and passionate about sport.

“The WRFL were supportive and encouraging towards the teams and players in promoting the inaugural season alongside a well-established football league,” she said.

“I am really excited for the 2019 season having more teams and more competition rounds.

“It is a platform to showcase the strong and competitive netballers the western suburbs has produced.”

Rowe said it was great to see so many clubs show an interest in netball.

“Not only is it a great competition, but the clubs are committed to incorporating netball alongside football, giving more people the opportunity to get involved in sport and a community organisation,” she said.

Chamra said she was already counting down to next season.

“I’m looking forward to next season to see how the clubs from last season have improved in the off season and to hopefully see the clubs that didn’t have a team in the inaugural year be able to join the competition,” she said.

“I would really encourage all of the clubs to put in a lot of effort into finding players to join this new chapter in the WRFL, ask wives, girlfriends, sisters, anyone, it really is a great competition to be a part of and a great way to expand your club community.”

North Footscray’s Megan Murphy would also strongly encourage clubs and players to get involved.

“I absolutely loved the first season of WRFL Netball, it is such a good competition and everyone is really friendly,” she said.
