YOUNG GUNS LEAD THE WAY

Spotswood Senior Women’s captain Caitlin Brennan says she is happy with how her team is tracking in 2021, despite the challenges faced over the past two months.

Melbourne’s recent lockdown’s due to Covid-19 outbreaks has forced Victoria University Polytechnic Senior Women’s games to be cancelled, however the season will recommence this weekend.

Brennan says the team was looking forward to kick-starting their premiership defence on Saturday.

“We are definitely happy to be back,” she said.

“It has been a difficult season to predict, we didn’t play last year, and we didn’t know how the other teams will be travelling. We have a completely different team compared to 2019, so I am pretty happy with how we are developing.”

Brennan, who was a key player in their 2019 premiership victory, says one of the things that has impressed her most this season has been the impact of the club’s young players.

“A lot of the girls are players who have come up from the Under 18 Girls team and they have all played together for three or four years and have won premierships together,” she said.

“They are a pretty tight knit group, and they know how each other play. We sometimes don’t need instructions because they all know their strengths and weaknesses.”

This Saturday, Spotswood will go head-to-head with Caroline Springs at Taylors Run Oval.

Brennan said training would be longer this week in a bid to minimise the injury risk after not playing for two weeks.

“The last time we played Caroline Springs it was two degrees, and it was at night, so this time around it will be a completely different game. It should be a good game.”

The Victoria University Polytechnic Senior Women’s match will be played at 10.30am on Saturday.
